Sites Reservoir
Water is one of our most precious resources. Many California cities and water districts struggle to obtain sufficient water to sustain their growing populations and economies. Whether in times of plenty or drought, cities and water districts state-wide face a never-ending challenge to acquire, treat, and distribute water to customers. American Canyon is no exception. The main source for our water supply is the State Water Project through the North Bay Aqueduct. During the peak irrigation season, we supplement our supply as needed with treated water from the cities of Napa and Vallejo.
In 2017, the City became a partner in the Sites Reservoir Project, an environmentally beneficial, off-river reservoir that will capture excess water from major storms and save it for drier periods.
About the Project
Sites Reservoir will provide a more sustainable water supply for all of California. With a capacity of 1.5 million acre-feet, Sites is an essential part of California’s comprehensive Water Supply Strategy to ensure the state is more resilient and resistant to changing climate conditions.
Located 10 miles west of the town of Maxwell in rural Glenn and Colusa counties, Sites Reservoir would capture and store water from the Sacramento River during high flows and release it to California’s communities, farms and environment in dry periods when it’s needed the most.
