On Tuesday, June 16, the American Canyon City Council voted to place a 1-cent local sales tax measure on the Nov. 3, 2026 ballot. If approved by voters, the proposed measure could help fund local City services such as public safety, wildfire mitigation programs, infrastructure and parks and recreation initiatives. While American Canyon’s budget is currently balanced, expenses are projected to outpace revenues starting in fiscal year (FY) 2029-30, resulting in a deficit of almost $1 million by FY 2032-33. As a key community priority, public safety continues to be one of the largest expenses of the General Fund. The $10.5 million General Fund Police Department budget for Fiscal Year 2026-27 represents 30% of the General Fund, marking a 8% increase from the $9.7 million spent on Public Safety in FY 2025-26. “Our City Council remains committed to funding services that matter most to our community, including public safety, fire mitigation and parks and recreation,” said Mayor Pierre Washington. “With rising costs and inflation, this measure helps the City’s ability to maintain services our community relies on.” As American Canyon grows, sales tax remains one of the main revenue sources. A proposed 1-cent increase would raise the City’s current 7.75% rate to 8.75%, matching the sales tax rate of the City of Napa. If approved, this measure is projected to generate $3.7 million annually for the General Fund to support essential city services and community priorities such as public safety, fire mitigation and future parks and recreation investments. “We are always looking ahead to ensure we maintain the quality of life our residents expect,” said City Manager Jason Holley. “This measure keeps our tax dollars right here in the community, going straight toward the services residents use every day.” If approved by voters in the November election, the proposed revenue measure would go into effect in April 2027.
