Flex Alerts are voluntary calls for consumers to conserve electricity. A Flex Alert is typically issued in the summer when extremely hot weather pushes up energy demand. The alerts are organized by the California ISO (CAISO), which manages the flow of electricity across the high-voltage, long-distance power lines that make up 80 percent of California's and a small part of Nevada's power grid.
Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) may turn off electricity when gusty winds and dry conditions, combined with a heightened fire risk, are forecasted. This is called a Public Safety Power Shutoff or PSPS.
While customers in high fire-threat areas are more likely to be affected, any of PG&E’s more than 5 million electric customers could have their power shut off. This is because the energy system relies on power lines working together to provide electricity across cities, counties and regions.
Be sure you have signed up with PG&E to be notified of future potential shutoffs. If you don’t have a PG&E account but would like to know about PSPS events where a family member lives or your workplace, sign up for PSPS ZIP Code Alerts.
